Recently Dr Squash and Dr Wallop saw a young girl with complex needs who was lying down on the couch in the lounge area. She had no speech and they were told she liked to use her arms and ‘whack’ things. They approached her with a simple and gentle name song using the ukelele.
Dr Squash stayed on one side of her while Dr Wallop went round the other side of the couch to be at her head so she didn’t strain to look at them both. They started singing a jazzy song that included using her name. Wallop then started using a finger light and a shaker and would let the shaker fall slowly somewhere on the girl’s body that would stop the song and they would look for it using playful annoyed grumbles which made the girl smile. They had found the game!
They repeated this action and sometimes the shaker would end up in the girl’s hand which sometimes she’d throw it causing the Clowndoctors to make a big reaction which she loved!
The visit had gone from a chilled out session on the couch to the girl really enjoying using her arm to throw the shaker and the Clowndoctors not being able to find it. Her dad had been watching throughout and was so happy to see her smiling away and responding.
It was a lovely result!
